About Adam
Adam is a former Grenadier Guards Officer and Television Reporter. He has worked for Newsnight, World in Action, and as an ITN Reporter.
He was best known in television for his work as an undercover reporter - his programmes including the award winning "No Fixed Abode" series where he lived homeless in London for about three months, showing the plight of the genuinely destitute.
At ITN he was for a time Bosnia reporter, a London based general reporter and ran the investigative unit making News At Ten special reports.
Adam was educated at Cambridge University (MA Social and Political Science) and holds an MBA from Imperial College London. He was formerly on the board of Christian Aid, and is now involved with a number of charities.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament in May 2005.
Campaigning on...
Anti-social behaviour
The main issue for people is Gravesham are the growing levels of anti-social behaviour and crime. Adam and Gravesham Conservatives are running a campaign to increase Police numbers, and against the damaging aspects of political correctness that increasingly make many members of the public feel that "vandals have more rights than their victims". He'd also like to see the Police have more powers to deal with the problem - and to see the Police given more time to do their jobs by cutting down on paper-work.
Health and education
Labour came into power determined to improve them - but "things have yet to get better". Why? Labour raised taxes by stealth, throwing huge amounts of taxpayers money at the problem with little tangible benefit to people in Gravesham. Their instinct is completely control how that money is spent.
Adam wants to make sure that he gets the message across that the Conservatives are determined to succeed in these areas where Labour have failed - to convince them that real improvement will come for everyone by Conservative policies in these areas.
Conservatives would allow the best people to make decisions about how money is spent: Doctors and Patients, Teacher and Parents. Conservatives will spend the same amount, BUT give real power to the experts, and choice to people who pay for the services.
Asylum
Our asylum laws are being abused by people who are really economic migrants. Adam agrees that if he came from a poorer country he too might want to move to a richer one - so does not blame migrants who want to come here. Contrary to press reports the vast majority of migrants come here to work, not to accept handouts. But whichever way you cut it, they are abusing laws designed to protect those in real trouble - real refugees.
Because of this abuse at the moment the peoples of Britain - of every creed, colour or political view - have not control at all. Residents of Gravesham are powerless in this respect. Labour knows what most people in this country want and what needs to be done. But Labour is so fearful of the political correctness of their hardcore supporters that they do not have the guts to do what is right and fair.
We must send back proven abusers of the asylum system - and cherish the genuine asylum seeker. That will send a simple message: do not come to Britain - unless we decide we want you here, or you genuinely need our help.
